Hey You, Your Headphones Suck!

No matter how good of a person I try to be, there always seems to be someone who will come along and TRY MY PATIENCE!

Breathe, Paul Benjamin, Breathe...

So, this morning I was riding the bus to work and sure enough...A Trixie gets on the bus and sits nearby with her headphones blaring!

There's always gotta be one, right?

It's annoying whenever it happens, but it is especially annoying on the morning commute.  Most people are very quiet in the morning, either reading the paper or listening to gentle music on their ipods.

So when an obnoxious girl gets on the bus and selfishly blares her music, it's quite the jolt!

I have never hit a woman in my life, but if i were to start....!!!!

Seriously, people were giving her dirty, dirty looks.  Of course, she looked oblivious to it all, with those huge sunglasses on that covered her entire face!

And the worst part?  It was TERRIBLE music!
Oh yeah, it was some gross stuff.  I could hear it clear as day, like someone was actually playing a radio!

I wanted to say something to her so bad, but decided, "Let it go, Paul. It's not worth it..."

Well...

To get to work, I can take 1 of 4 different buses that go past my house.  The bus I took this morning requires me to get off and then walk about 10 minutes to the office...OR, I could walk a block and transfer to a different bus to take me to the office.

This is a popular practice.  The funny thing is, this girl did the same thing!

So naturally, when we were the only two people at the bus stop waiting to transfer, I decided to say something to her.

Yeah, that's right...I did it.

I looked at her and said with a friendly, approachable smile, "Excuse me...You really need to get better headphones."

She looked befuddled.

"Either that, or you are just incredibly rude.  But I'm sure it's just your bad headphones..."

I'm still keeping it very light and friendly, hoping that this gets the point across.

I'm guessing she didn't care, as she looked away from me with an angry, scrunched face.

She never looked back at me.

I think she got the hint, though...

  1. So funny! I've wanted to slap many people on public transportation before, so your feelings are justified.

  2. Good for you!!!! This exact thing happened to me yesterday on the train. It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't know why it's SO annoying, but it is.

  3. The worst part is that it's usually always crappy music! hahahaha! At least they could play something that we can all enjoy.

  4. Well since I am a girl, I would've actually probably hit her.

Kidding, but I completely understand how annoying this is. It always happens to me when I am trying to read a book on the way home from work and then can't concentrate at all due to the irritating sound coming from headphones that are too loud!

  6. This is why sometimes, for the sake of my sanity, I need to drive to work. It's worth the few extra bucks. :)

  7. Paul at least its not the ghetto ass boys on the EL who use their phone speaker as their beat box. A few weeks ago this guy was listening to his Rap music via his phone. So I turned on my house music on my phone and held it up towards him. He got the point and left.

  9. It is annoying as hell! That and gum popping. Maybe that's just my thing but I hate it when I sit next to someone who is going for the gum popping olympics.

  10. Oh yes, the ridiculously rude, selfish trixie! The trixie is basically a douchebag with a vagina! When did it ever become ok to shit on everyone else in society in order to please our own wants. What jerks!

  11. I don't think there's anything I hate more than these people who are privileged and want to make sure that we all know it. I probably would've done my best to ignore her, but if I was pissed off enough I would say something to her too.

  12. Good for you! I'm glad you said something. I think as I get older, I speak up a bit more as well. Like at O'hare one night, when our flight was hours late and it was 1am. Then, we had to wait in the longest cab line ever.... an older woman was on the phone and started trying to pass me in the line. I shot her down, and she looked really mad. Then, these "corporate" male 'trixies' all dressed up and buddy-buddy let one of their friends in the line (directly in front of me), even though he came out after we were waiting in line for about 45 minutes. Since they are my "peers" and I get red-faced and nervous when I try to confront them, I said, "I hope you're all sharing a cab." They too looked shocked, and he said, "No, these are my friends." And I said, "Well, why do you think you're more important than everyone else here in the line?" [Face getting redder and nerdier]... anyway, everyone was super silent, and I was almost shaking... it turned out that he still got a cab in front of us all, and I ultimately felt like the bad guy. I'm just so happy you did this Paul. Sorry to rant and rave and type so much, but it gives me hope for the future. :) Have a good weekend y'all. Thanks for letting me vent. Love your blog.

  13. I completely agree with you and with Matt! Maybe if we all start speaking up, people will stop being so rude. Probably not, but you never know.

  15. Don't even get me started on how many times i've called people "Your Highness" after they walk through a door or elevator out of turn. Rudeness ABOUNDS everywhere. I've lost it in the Jewel Osco in Deerfield MANY times on those Northshore aholes.

it's just common courtesy to respect others commute. Isn't that the whole point of headphones? to keep the music to yourself.. Geez!

    Great Post Paul!

  21. You know what would really have gotten through to her? You know how Trixies are all about money, right? You should have told her that clearly she must be poor if she can't afford better earphones! That would have made her turn it down real quick!

  22. haha. nice.
so did she turn them down?

  25. Paul!

I give you credit. You could've easily bitched that bitch out!

Instead you tried to jokingly get her to see that she was being rude.

If you ever see her again and this happens all over, you have my full permission to punch her square in the face!

  26. You've never had a problem speaking your mind before, so why should you start being shy now? haha! Good for you. She needed to be put in her place.

  27. Oy, she sounds totally rude and nasty! Good for your for speaking up, and putting it quite nicely I think.

This has happened to me also, I hate the cheap headphones people use - outside, at the gym, everywhere. The whole idea of headphones is all so I don't have to hear your crappy music, people! Might as well carry a big ass 80s boombox on your shoulder!
